In Ayurveda, the summer months tend to manifest in the environment and the body as heat, brightness, sharpness, and light.
Because of the excessive heat, trying to keep pitta in balance can quickly become an issue. In this season, the skin will often react by becoming irritated with dryness or excessive oiliness, redness, insect bites, and, of course, overexposure to the sun.
Skin care is very important in Ayurveda because it can show if you are getting proper nutrients and can be a beautiful way to start a self-care regimen. Each skin type is different and prevention of acne or rashes is easier to handle. When you start to get a glow to your skin you will feel healthy, vivacious, and confident.
Tips for That Summer Glow
Oiliation. There is a misconception that oil is bad for your skin and gives you acne. In fact, a daily oil massage of your body and face keeps your skin healthy and beautiful especially with oils such as sesame and coconut oil that have natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Many oils are in fact rich in minerals like copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants that get absorbed into your skin. Gentle oil massages keep the skin soft and healthy.
Eat Iron rich food. Make sure you’re getting enough iron. Anemia can make the skin look very pale and even green at times. To counteract this, try eating cooked beets or carrot juice. The natural iron in these vegetables will help reduce signs of anemia and give the skin a healthy glow.
Turmeric. Try taking turmeric or incorporating it more into your diet. Turmeric, in Ayurveda, is one of the most used herbs and researched herbs. Turmeric can be cooked with, taken in tablets, and used topically as a facemask. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and can be used to reduce oiliness, appearance of aging, dark spots, and is great for sensitive skin.
Always protect the skin and apply sunscreen. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and never lie out during the sun’s hottest time, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you must be outside during these times, wear a hat and a good pair of sunglasses.
Easy on the soap. Soap’s foaming action lifts up and carries away the oils necessary to lubricate the skin. This can cause the skin to become dry or can lead to overproduction of oil, either of which is bothersome. Therefore, be selective with your summer skincare routine and use soap only as needed.
Eat hydrating produce. Cucumber, watermelon, peaches, strawberries and zucchini are all very abundant during this season and can provide hydration and healthy nourishment for the tissues, providing extra luster and vibrancy to the skin.

Some individuals who use large amounts of chemicals on their skin and internally, such as chemical soaps, deodorants, perfumes, and some medications have weakened skin. This can result in a person being more prone to burn.
In Ayurveda, Pitta people who are more fair-skinned can be more susceptible to burns, though all doshas can experience it.
- Treat irritation with cilantro. The best way to support and calm any areas of redness, irritation, or other pitta reactions is with fresh cilantro. Wash a bunch of cilantro leaves and blend with water. Strain the pulp and use the pulp externally on any irritation and drink the water as a tonic for a cooling and hydrating benefit.
- Apply tikta ghrita (bitter ghee) to the skin.
- Apply fresh aloe vera or coconut oil to any irritated skin.
- If overexposure does occur, add 10 drops of jasmine, khus, or rose essential oil to a cool bath and soak for twenty minutes. After patting the skin dry, apply cooling coconut oil, aloe vera, or any rich skin balm.
