In Ayurveda your kitchen is your doctor’s office. Ayurveda heals through the gut. The importance of gut heath in Ayurveda is the key to removing toxins (Ama) from the body. Our “gut”, also known as our microbiome or microflora, is made up of around 100 trillion microorganisms from more than 1000 species. These microoorganisms regulate metabolism, protect against infections, promote normal GI function, synthesize essential nutrients, and regulate the immune system. 60-80% of our immune system is located in our gut, so that’s why our prescription comes in the form of herbs, spices, and roots.
Here is our list of the top herbs, spices, and roots that everyone should have in their kitchen. This does not include salt and black pepper, which are both great heating agents. All of these spices can be found at a local health food grocery store.
