Now that we have talked about the lower three survival chakras and the balancing heart chakra, we can now discuss the higher three chakras. From the heart chakra, you ascend into the throat chakra. In Ayurveda, it is believed our bodies are aligned with seven energies that connect to our nervous systems. They connect the mind, body, and consciousness. Each energy, or chakra, houses different experiences and information that is unique to the individual. The seven Chakras consist of: the Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and the Crown Chakra. Higher being ascension begins with the throat Chakra.

Where is the Throat Chakra?

The throat chakra is located in, well, your throat. It is housed in organs like your thyroid, mouth and jaw making this the energy of communication. The element associated with the throat energy is ether. Ether is a clear, expansive element, which is why this energy is responsible to communication, words, truth, and creativity. Speaking your truth accompanies this energy. It begins to open the mind and consciousness to higher energies and aligns the truth of who you are, to the truth of the universe. It is what ignites the souls journey to higher understanding and awareness.

Vijnanamaya: Intellect and Intuition

The kosha, or sheath of energy, associated with the throat chakra is called Vijnanamaya, meaning “made of intellect.” This electromagnetic field extends outward from your body about three feet. The words you speak travel outward and dissipate into the energetic universe that surrounds you. The awareness of your truth, whatever that may be, is one of the higher energies that connects you to the universal mind. This channel aligns the vibrations of your mind, body, and soul together. Speaking untruth into this field has repercussions that lead you down the wrong path away from your truth. Nonetheless, aligning the lower three chakras and the heart, will direct you back onto the path you were always meant to follow.

Balance and Imbalance

If your throat chakra is blocked, this will manifest itself as an inability to speak up for yourself. Sometimes it can also manifest as thyroid problems, couching, or a sore throat. Emotionally this can feel like a lack of creativity, self-expression, and extreme criticism of self or others. Imbalance in this energy may also hold fear of rejection and conflict. If you have something you feel needs to be said, holding it back and not allowing the words to flow out create a blockage in this energy. If you are allowing people to treat you in ways you don’t feel is right, but you cannot tell them to stop, this is not speaking your truth. Speaking out loud, whether it is to yourself or to a friend or therapist, can bring communication and open the flow of this energy and allow it to ascend to the higher two chakras of the mind.

Some basic ways to balance the throat chakra are:

  • Authentically express yourself
  • Sing, hum, and laugh
  • Wear blue as this is the color of the throat chakra
  • Aromatherapy using peppermint or lavender
  • Practice yoga, specifically shoulder stand pose and cobra pose
  • Drinking warm herbal teas
  • Talk therapy

Healthy communication from your internal world to your external world is crucial in identifying your truth. Awareness and openness in communication allows for this truth to resonate into the world and bring the lifestyle back to you. If it is authentically you, you will attract everything you need in order to fulfill that truth. Meditation on this openness can be a catalyst to changing your life. A mantra to practice opening the throat chakra is “hum” meaning “I speak.” The vibrations of speaking this mantra out loud clears the passage of the physical throat, but also the passage to your higher being. Be open to receiving what your truth is. You have held the answer to your truth since you were born. Allow it to surface and write down anything that comes to your mind. Be patient with yourself as this can be a process. Patience and love for yourself is a basic principle of your truth and will lead you in the right direction!
