In Ayurveda, it’s important to take care of your skin. Our skin is the first organ to show signs of imbalance or deficiencies. The Garshana is a traditional Ayurvedic dry massage that stimulates the skin and lymphatic system, releases accumulated toxins in the skin, and enhances blood circulation.  Dry brushing helps shed dead skin cells, while encouraging cell renewal, which results in smoother and brighter skin. It can also help get rid of ingrown hairs and eliminating clogged pores.

To perform a garshana, you will need a dry brush, natural silk glove, or a soft sponge that can gently remove dead skin layers leaving your skin fresh and glowing.

The ideal time of day to dry brush is in the morning before your shower, so you can rinse off the impurities loosened by the massage. It is also a very stimulating massage, so a great way to feel refreshed in the morning!

Steps to perform the Garshana, the traditional Ayurvedic dry massage:

  • Massage your entire body, excluding your face, chest, and heart. Avoid sensitive areas and broken or inflamed skin.
  • Use circular strokes on the stomach and joints (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and ankles). Do long sweeping stroked on the arms and legs.
  • Apply light pressure on more sensitive areas where the skin is thin, such as underarms, and apply more pressure when the skin is thicker, such as soles of the feet.
  • The direction of the strokes should be toward the heart as this stimulate your lymphatic system, Massage your feet upward, continuing up to your torso and neck. As well as from your hands to your shoulders. Do the dry massage for a minimum of five minutes.
  • Take your morning shower!
