Sunburns are an acute inflammatory condition of the skin cells due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or another source. The inflammation can be mild or very serious! It can affect people differently though and the factor isn’t always just the sun!
Some individuals who use large amounts of chemicals on their skin and internally, such as chemical soaps, deodorants, perfumes, and some medications have weakened skin. This can result in a person being more prone to burn. In Ayurveda, Pitta people who are more fair-skinned can be more susceptible to burns, though all doshas can experience it.
Sunburns can result in dizziness, nausea, blisters, sensitivity to light, and peeling of the skin. Repeat sunburns and exposure to the sun can result in premature aging and wrinkled skin.
- Apply aloe vera to the site of the burn. You can use pure aloe vera with no preservatives or use it directly from the plant.
- If you have no access to aloe vera, coconut oil is also very cooling and can help calm the inflammation.
- Apply cool milk with gauze to the sunburn.
- Apply tikta ghrita (bitter ghee) to the skin.
- Make a paste of turmeric and sandalwood in equal amounts with a little cool water. Apply gently to skin. (This can stain your skin yellow for a few days.)
- Minimize exposure to the sunlight at the peak hours of the day.
- Limit your time in direct sunlight to half an hour or less depending on where you live.
- Before going in the sun apply neem oil (with a base oil) to the exposed parts of your skin. It can help protect your skin.
- Drink coconut water.
- Follow a pitta pacifying diet making sure to avoid spicy, hot, and fermented foods and alcohol.
- Before and after showering apply a moisturizer, such as neem oil.
