Tulsi (Holy Basil) Ocimum tenuiflorum
In Ayurveda, Tulsi is not just revered for its medicinal properties but is also surrounded by rich mythology and spiritual significance. Here’s a brief overview of the traditional story.
The Legend of Tulsi
Tulsi is often associated with the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, Tulsi was originally a mortal woman named “Vrinda”, who was deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu. She performed intense penance to win Lord Vishnu’s affection. As a reward for her devotion, Vishnu granted her a wish. She wished to be with him eternally.
However, a demon named “Jalandhar,” who was her husband, held immense power. To defeat him, Lord Vishnu transformed Vrinda into the sacred Tulsi plant. This act allowed her to remain connected to him while also serving humanity.
After her transformation, Tulsi became a symbol of love, fidelity, and devotion. It is believed that she blesses those who worship her and that her presence purifies the surroundings.
Tulsi is considered a sacred plant in Hindu households. It is typically planted in a small courtyard known as a “Tulsi Vrindavan.” Daily worship of Tulsi is practiced as it is believed to bring prosperity, health, and spiritual growth.
